In an inconspicuous backyard in Portland’s Alberta Arts District, a 73-year-old master craftswoman has been knitting what are arguably the best socks in America for over half a century. But now it’s all coming to an end. We visited Margaret Bennett in her workshop to find out why she’s giving it all up – and why her last socks could now become the most popular Christmas gift.
Margaret Bennett (73) in her workshop in Portland. After 52 years, she is closing her life’s work.
Portland, November. The small workshop smells of wool and wood. Colorful balls of yarn hang on the walls, and half-finished socks with cute animal motifs lie on the table. Margaret Bennett sits at her old knitting machine—as she has done since 1972. But this is her last winter.
“I’m 73,” she says quietly. “My hands hurt. The arthritis is getting worse.” She shows her fingers – decades of manual labor have left their mark. “But that’s not the only reason. The world has changed. Nobody wants to pay for real handcrafted goods anymore. Everything comes from China, from factories. My way of working is dying out.”
Margaret has calculated that in 52 years she has knitted around 87,000 pairs of socks. Each one by hand. “In the beginning, they were simple wool socks for mountain huts. Then customers came and wanted something special—with patterns, with colors. That’s how my animal socks came about.”
Every stitch is perfect—after 52 years, Margaret knows every move by heart.
What makes her socks special is not just their lovely design. It is the three-layer knitting technique she learned from her grandmother—an old method from the Alpine region that hardly anyone knows how to do anymore.
The three-layer technique: Between the inner and outer wool layers is an air chamber structure that stores heat like a thermos. This technique makes the socks four times warmer than normal knitted socks—and virtually indestructible.
Margaret opens an old wooden cabinet. Inside are hundreds of letters. “These are thank-you letters from customers. Some of them have been writing to me for decades.” She pulls out one dated 2004. It reads: “Dear Ms. Bennett, I still wear the socks I bought from you in 1998. They are still like new.”
There is a simple reason for this durability: quality over quantity. While mass production focuses on speed, Margaret takes her time. An animal sock takes 3-4 hours to make – from the first stitch to the finished pair.
Margaret’s workshop is filled with balls of wool and handmade socks—the result of 52 years of passion.
Margaret is closing her workshop for good at the end of December. “I don’t have a successor. Nobody wants to learn this craft anymore—it takes years to master.” She still has around 2,400 pairs of socks in her warehouse. Her life’s work. The last of their kind.
In order to get rid of them before Christmas, she has decided to take a drastic step: 50% discount on all socks. “It’s not about the money anymore. I want the socks to go to people who appreciate them. People who understand what real craftsmanship means. My grandchildren Jule (24) and Tobias (27) helped me sell the socks online, because I’m not familiar with that at my age,” said Margaret with a laugh.
Margaret explained that Tobias had the idea of selling the socks under the name HugSocks, because the little animals look as if they are hugging your legs.
🌟 “I never thought socks could be so much fun! Not only is the little bat on my feet incredibly cute, but the socks also keep me really warm. Since I’ve been wearing them, my feet are finally no longer freezing cold in the evenings.”
– Sabine H., 56, from Seattle
🌟 “I work as a teacher every day – I’m on my feet a lot, often barefoot at the daycare center. The HugSocks with the koala are a dream: super soft, no sweating, and the kids love them! I will definitely order more animal designs.”
– Linda B., 38, from Denver
🌟 “At first, I was skeptical, wondering if it was just a gimmick—but now I’m completely convinced. The socks with the unicorn not only look great, they’re also thicker and warmer than anything I’ve worn before. Ideal for cold winter evenings on the sofa.”
– Sibille M., 54, from Chicago
🌟 “My son fell in love with the pandas right away. He even wears them to bed! The socks are his new favorite thing. You can tell they’re high quality right away.”
– Thomas K., 41, from Minneapolis
What makes Margaret’s socks a special Christmas gift is not just their quality. It’s the story behind them. “When you give someone these socks, you’re giving them a piece of genuine craftsmanship. Something that will never be seen again.”
Her customer Sabine M. (48) from Hamburg confirms this: “I gave my mother a pair for her birthday two weeks ago. She cried. Not because of the socks—but because she felt how much love and work had gone into them. You can’t put a price on that.”
Margaret plans to close her workshop for good on December 23. “I want to have sold everything by then. Then it’s over.” She smiles wistfully. “52 years. It was a wonderful time.”
Anyone who wants to get their hands on a pair of Margaret’s legendary socks should act fast. With a 50% discount and the pre-Christmas rush, stocks are unlikely to last long. This is the last chance to own a piece of genuine craftsmanship—before it disappears forever.
HugSocks™ are the socks that people love.
